This fabric patch was created at a temporary public design workshop put on by the Extinction Rebellion (XR) Arts Group in the fall of 2018 and spring of 2019. Visitors to the design workshops are encouraged to emblazon items of clothing or fabric that they already own using the group’s block prints, minimising consumption and eliminating any commercial transaction in the propagation of XR’s identity. This is one of six brightly-coloured printed patches acquired by the V&A, reflecting the group’s attention towards promoting a consistent visual aesthetic in their public actions while operating within their ecological ideals. Made from surplus material from the textile trade, the small size of the patches further minimises the footprint of objects created expressly for the purpose of protest. The vivid hues enable them to deliver a high-impact punch of colour amidst crowds and create a broad sense of unification amongst XR’s members.
