Extinction Rebellion Leaflet

Leaflet
2018
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This printed leaflet lists the Extinction Rebellion group’s initial declaration of its ideals and aims. These include to ‘Tell the Truth’, ‘Act Now’, and ‘Go Beyond Politics’. This leaflet is from the limited first-run of materials created by the group for distribution to the public on 31 October 2018. The immediate popularity of these pamphlets makes this example extremely rare, while the screen-printed text and graphics make clear the emphasis placed on the group’s visual identity from the outset.

Graphic Identify Extinction Rebellion (XR) is an activist group calling for urgent action on climate change. They use civil disobedience and disruption to urge governments to ‘tell the truth’ among other demands. Since its first public action on 31 October 2018, XR has grown into an international movement with over 350 groups operating in 59 countries. These objects were created by the Extinction Rebellion Arts Group, a coalition of graphic designers, artists and activists responsible for the XR Design Programme. There are four parts to the identity that help people recognise XR: the Extinction Symbol, the Extinction Rebellion logotype, a set of colours, and a bespoke font. The Extinction Symbol, designed by street artist ESP in 2011, was adopted by the group in 2018. XR characterises itself as a ‘do-it-together’ movement. The identity is available digitally and is designed to be easily reproducible. The graphic power of the identity has been key to XR’s public impact and has been instrumental in catalysing public pressure. On 1 May 2019, the UK Parliament declared a climate emergency.
