Place of origin

Helen Angell (born Coleman) enjoyed a distinguished career and was appointed official Flower Painter to Queen Victoria in 1879. She was taught to paint by her brother William; in return she assisted him with his decorative work for Minton's pottery. Historically, many women artists were taught to paint by family members in the absence of formal training opportunities. In the 19th century, floral still lifes and domestic interiors were seen as appropriate subjects for women artists.
