Rackham’s delicate pen and watercolour designs were among the first to be printed in halftone using photographic colour separation. When magnified (see image, top left), the colour appears as circles of blue, yellow, red and black dots created from four screens set at different angles. Printing such colour images using this method required the use of special coated paper, so illustrations appeared on pages separate from the text.
