At Glyndebourne, Oliver Messel supervised all aspects of the set building. He also designed and made props and painted scenery. This sconce was wall-mounted on the set and lit with tiny electric light bulbs to give the impression of an 18th-century candlelit interior. The clever combination of materials and Messel’s talent for design created, as one observer remarked, ‘an exquisite and sumptuous’ room.
