SCONCES FOR THE SET OF ARIADNE AUF NAXOS
1953

At Glyndebourne, Oliver Messel supervised all aspects of the set building. He also designed and made props and painted scenery. These sconces were wall-mounted on the set and lit with tiny electric light bulbs to give the impression of an 18th-century candlelit interior. The clever combination of materials and Messel’s talent for design created, as one observer remarked, ‘an exquisite and sumptuous’ room.
