Poster advertising Hagoromo, Ballet de Faust and Le Spectre de la Rose, Theatre de Monte Carlo, 22 January 1923.
During the 1920s the Ballets Russes was in residence in Monte Carlo and while rehearsing and creating their own programmes they also served as the opera ballet. In 1923 the dancers of the Ballets Russes performed alongside the dancers already employed for the season by Raoul Gunsbourg, director of the Opera and his ballet master M. Belloni. This poster is notable as it indicates the transformation of ballet in the early C20th. Hagoromo is choreographed by M. Stitchel and designed by Leon Bakst with Monte Carlo dancers in the leading roles. The 'Walpurgis Night' ballet from Faust is choreographed by Bellini with a mixture of dancers from both companies while Le Spectre de la rose is danced by Vera Nemchinova and Stanislas Idzikowski of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.
