Place of origin

Binding of brown calf with gold tooling, raised bands on spine. Painted decoration: four medallions arranged symmetrically around central motif, gold pointillé tooling background.
The binding still encloses thirteen original leaves (ff. ii-xiv), all blank except f. v, which has sketches of a lily, seen from various angles, and f. vi, which has the outline of a pear. Ff. i and xv are thin flyleaves, possibly added later. When the watercolours were removed, some modern paper leaves were pasted in onto remaining stubs. Unfortunately, it was done to give the binding some bulk rather than to reflect where the leaves had been taken out.
