THE JAIN MONKS By Shanti Panchal (b. 1951) Watercolour on paper London, 2008 IS.21-2019 Purchased with the assistance of the V&A Jain Art Fund Panchal’s style consciously evokes Jain and Hindu paintings of the 15th and 16th centuries. As part of his distinctive technique, he applies multiple layers of watercolour, then scrapes details away with an oil brush. For this painting, Panchal was inspired by a padabhishek ceremony he witnessed in Mumbai, where a Jain monk was initiated as an acharya, the highest monastic rank. A monk holds the robe that will be presented to the new acharya.(07/03/2022)
