Mug of buff earthenware covered with a white slip and yellow lead glaze. Decoration moulded and applied. Cylindrical with moulded foot and loop handle. Round the sides a rose and thistle spray applied in relief on a medallion, repeated four times. Two of the medallions being covered with a brown pigment.

Historical context | A milk pail bought for the Hanley Museums at the Revalstoke sale, Bottick and Simpson's, Nov. 21, lot 450, of red earthenware with applied moulded medallion of a bird and two fronds in white (yellow glaze) is somewhat similar in technique; it is inscribed "Mary Martin, Tarring Sussex". |
