Costume design by Lila De Nobili (1916-2002) for Marullo and Borsa in Franco Zeffirelli's production of Giuseppe Verdi's opera Rigoletto at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Lila De Nobili designed the sets and costumes for the production which was first performed on 7th February 1964. It remained in the repertory until 1984. Lila De Nobili’s contribution to the opera was highly praised: The Guardian on 8th February 1964 described her costumes as excellent and the Sunday Times on 9th February 1964 referred to the first scene as a ‘complex and gorgeous Veronese tableau vivant'.
The V&A Theatre & Performance Department holds an extensive collection of Houston Rogers’ photographs of this production.

Heavily annotated costume design by Lila De Nobili (1916-2002) for Marullo and Borsa in Rigoletto. Two male figures in watercolour and a further two pencil sketches showing details of the fabrics. They wear hats, doublets, breeches, coats, tights and shoes. The figure on the left is in shades of orange, red, brown, dark green and yellow. The figure on the right wears shades of bright yellow, mint green, dark blue and orange. The pencil sketch on the upper right shows a detail of the breeches and legs. The pencil sketch on the lower right shows the breeches and a detail of one of the sleeves.
