Object history
According to Rodney Searight: - `Bt.fr. Alistair Mathews, Nov. 1965 £12-10[shillings]'.
Historical context
Apparently a sketch made in connection with the lithography of The Immersion of the Pilgrims in the Jordan, [Pl.4] in Roberts, Holy Land, 1842-9, Vol.II, (1855 edn., Vol.II, Pl.48). It is possible that it represents an intermediary stage between Roberts's on-the-spot sketch and the final watercolour, redrawn for the lithograph: see H. Guiterman, `David Roberts R.A. (1796-1864)', The Old Water-Colour Society's Club, Vol.59, 1985 & Vol.60, 1986. Alternatively it could represent a later stage in the preparatory process; cf. Barbican Art Gallery, David Roberts, 1986 (182).
