Futaba-en specialise in stencil dyeing. In particular, the workshop preserves the techniques and designs of wa-sarasa, originally inspired by the South Asian fabrics imported by Dutch traders. These complicated patterns require numerous stencils through which the colours are brushed. This garment, specially made for the V&A, is also hand painted.
