Object history

The costume is a remake of a costume designed by Cecil Beaton and worn by one of the extras in the Ascot scene of the film My Fair Lady (1964). Beaton won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for his designs and commissioned M. Berman Ltd. to make a replica for his 1971 exhibition at the V&A Fashion: An Anthology. The costume was then acquired by the V&A/

While the original costume was worn by an extra in the film, Beaton photographed Audrey Hepburn wearing it for a shot on the My Fair Lady set for Vogue.

The original costume is in the Warner Bros. archive.
