Object history | According to Rodney Searight: - `Bt. fr. C. Powney, June 1965 £45 '. |
Historical context | As an etching published in London by J. Hatchard, Piccadilly, J. Ginger, Piccadilly, and J. Asperne, Cornhill, 1803. See E. Gombrich, `Imagery and Art in the Romantic Period', Burlington Magazine, Vol.91, June 1949, pp.153-9. In 1803, Ker Porter published four atrocity etchings for the British Government's propaganda campaign against Napoleon. Gombrich states that Porter's prints anticipate Goya's scenes of Napoleonic massacres in and after the Spanish wars. He suggests that Goya may have seen Porter's prints in Spain. According to unsubstantiated tradition, Goya may have been in Saragossa at the same time as Ker Porter, in 1808. For accounts of the actual incident at Jaffa, which occurred in 1799, see Searight Archive. |
