The Carl Alan Awards are presented by Theatre Dance Council International, which was founded in 1958 as a forum for the teachers of dance. The Awards are named after Carl Heimann and Alan B. Fairley, the joint chairmen of Mecca Dancing Ltd, and are regarded as 'the Oscars of the World of Dance'.
Recipient Joe Loss was one of the most popular UK band leaders of the 20th century. In 1930 he formed his first professional band, which he continued to lead until 1990. In 1933, he made his first broadcast for the BBC. His recording career began the same year, working with artists like Vera Lynn and Chick Henderson. He was awarded the OBE for services to music in 1978.
