Place of origin |
Devotional plaques such as this, often representing folk deities or heroes, are set into the walls of houses in Rajasthan and Gujarat. They are frequently painted in bright colours, but this one, which was acquired from the exhibition Living Arts of India during the Festival of India in 1982, has been left unpainted. The two four-armed female figures are unidentified, but the fact that they are both grasping a trident suggests that they are connected with the god Shiva.
