Once Upon a Time
Collage
2013
2013
Tarlan Rafiee's graphic collages from the 'Once Upon a Time' series bring together iconic Iranian figures, place and things, stacked in dense lines and saturated colour. The combination and superposition of diverse symbols address the richness of Iranian modern identity.
The figures of Haj Mohammad Sadegh Bolourforoush and the Gholamreza Takhti (1930-1968) are repeated on this work. They were two famous pahlavan and wrestler, respectively from the end of the nineteenth century to the mid twentieth century. Different Iranian symbols surround them, such as multiple representations of flowers and mount Damavand, the Azadi tower in Tehran built in 1971 and finally Iran's national car, Paykan.
