Prince William of Gloucester

Photograph
1953 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

An eleven-year-old cousin of Queen Elizabeth poses for the camera in a toy car on the grounds of his home, Barnwell Manor. The photograph suggests an early love of speed and adventure for Prince William, who tragically died at the age of thirty while racing a light aircraft. The photographer in the frame is Cecil Beaton (1904–1980), who depicted the Royal Family over the course of forty years. One of his assistants most likely took this shot.
