A woman's gown of fustian block-printed with a maroon (madder-dyed?) ground on which is printed a design of vertical meandering branched trails with pink centres and white frond peripheries, intertwined with floral trails with green leaves and pink and white flowers. The gown is open at the front with shaped elbow-length sleeves. The bodice and skirt are cut separately and seamed at the waist. The back is made of two pleated pieces, tapering to the waist. The bodice and sleeves are lined with bleached linen. A line of stitching in the lining of the bodice fronts below the neckline forms a casing on either side, with a narrow linen-tape drawstring. The skirt is made of 1 width and two partial panels of fustian, flat-pleated into the waist.
The gown was probably made in the early 1780s, then updated about 5 years later. The bodice fronts were made slightly larger with piecing. The waist seam was unpicked at the back and the skirt raised above its original pointed centre back.
