Mrs Philip (Charlotte) Newman, who was working between 1870 and 1910, was a pupil of, and assistant to, the jeweller John Brogden. She made jewellery in the Classical and Renaissance revival styles and her pieces were shown with John Brogden at the International Exhibitions in Paris in 1867 and 1878. She won a médaille d'honneur for her collaboration with Brogden at the 1878 exhibition. After his death she took over his craftsmen and workshop and set up her own business.
