COSTUME WORN BY LAURENCE OLIVIER AS HAMLET
1948

Roger Furse was a leading theatre and film designer, famed for his association with Laurence Olivier. He designed Olivier’s films Henry V (1944), Hamlet (1948) and Richard III (1955). Hamlet was filmed in black and white, so the use of different tones and textures in the costumes helped absorb or reflect light. This costume helped win Furse the inaugural Oscar for Best Costume Design.
