Jackie Binns (1945-2015) was a talented maker across a range of materials. Her training as a jeweller was at Central School of Art and Design and at the Royal College of Art where her M.A. was followed with a post-graduate fellowship. Later in her career she moved to basket making, an aspect of her work which is represented in the South East Arts Craft Collection at Hove Museum and Art Gallery.
This ‘Face’ pendant and earrings, of 18 carat gold and cloisonné enamel, was made around the time she was awarded her M.A. from the R.C.A. in 1968. The set is quirky, witty and very evocative of its time. It was exhibited at the V&A in 1973 in the exhibition The Craftsman’s Art (cat. no. 267), a mixed media exhibition which was, according to the V&A press release, ‘the first crafts exhibition for twenty years to be organised on a national scale. More than 500 objects are on show, the work of 225 craftsmen, from all over the United Kingdom’.
