Object history | According to Rodney Searight: - `The pair [with SD.593], bt Sotheby's [18.10.79 (179)] via Fine Art Society, Oct.1979, £75 (incl. commissions)'. Probably originally from the same family source as SD.591 and SD.592. |
Historical context | SD.593 and SD.594 formed part of a large collection of watercolours and drawings by Lady Jane, sold by descendents in 1977. Subjects also included were portraits, designs for stained glass, illustrations to novels and poems, views of country houses associated with the family and other views in England, Europe and Egypt. Lady Jane apparently witnessed some of the preparations for the Anglo-Egyptian army's invasion of Sudan under General Kitchener in 1896: see Searight Archive, and T. Royle, The Kitchener Enigma, 1985. |
