  • 'COWPER'S HOUSE, AT OLNEY. / The Poet come from Huntingdon to this House at Olney in the / year 1767, and remained in it until 1786, a period of nineteen / years - the longest portion of his life which he spent in any place. / Here he indulged his gentle fanices for tending plants, and keeping / hares, and shewed his benevolent propensities, in dispensing, through / the kind assistance of Messrs. Smith and Thornton, his bounties to the poor. Here, at the culminating point of his mental power he / commenced also, and proceeded far in his translation of Homer. / Of his garden he says, "the very stones in the wall are my intimate / acquaintance - I should miss almost the minutest object." / WRIGHT, Photo., Olney.'
