Potter used one of her privately published versions of The Tailor of Gloucester as a working copy when planning the standard edition. In it she drafted two designs for a decorated endpaper: one with roundels and another with squares. Surprisingly, Potter was not keen on decorating endpapers, seeing them as places to rest the eyes prior to reading.
