Chris Levine is a Canadian-born artist who lives and works in the UK. He is known for his use of light in pursuit of an expanded state of awareness through image and form, working across a range of media including photography, music, performance and installation. He has produced illuminating and surprising portraits of subjects from Queen Elizabeth II to Grace Jones. His most recent commission was a formal portrait to commemorate the eightieth birthday of the Fourteenth Dalai Lama. Levine has also collaborated on large scale light installations for artists such as Massive Attack (Glastonbury Festival 2008), and has been commissioned by fashion houses including Chanel and Stella McCartney. Levine’s work often takes inspiration from early Buddhist theories, with a focus on the meditative state and the power of stillness. In his work, Levine alludes to the spiritual essence of his sitters to capture a reality detached from familiar representations. For these two lenticular portraits, Levine photographed international fashion models Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell with their eyes closed and very little external embellishment. This simplicity, combined with Levine’s use of light and the three-dimensional illusion of the lenticular print, challenges the norms of celebrity portraiture.
