Pinafore-style dress designed by Mary Quant in about 1962. Quant is one of the most iconic British designers of the 1960s.

An interior label calls the design ‘The Guards’ and identifies the materials as wool for the exterior and acetate for the lining. Lyn Gilbert (nee Leech ) was a pattern cutter and worked at Steinbergs, the company that made Quant’s Ginger Group line.

Worn by Lyn Gilbert (née Leech)

After training at the Barrett Street school (forerunner to the London College of Fashion), Lyn Gilbert worked as a pattern cutter for Horrockses Fashions which was owned by Steinbergs, manufacturer of the Mary Quant wholesale ranges. She made samples of Mary Quant designs using the dress stand shown here, sometimes buying the finished samples for herself.

This object was acquired as part of the V&A's #WeWantQuant campaign. This was a public call-out for objects designed by Mary Quant. This was run as part of the preparation for an exhibition on Mary Quant 2019/2020
