Content description | The central design is taken from the painting 'A Mermaid' (1900) by John William Waterhouse. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1901 and remains in their collection. It is possible that Waterhouse's painting was inspired by the Alfred Tennyson poem 'The Mermaid' written in 1830. |
