Historical context
For views of the Cedars of Lebanon by Lear, see RA, 1985 (26) and RA, The Orientalists, 1984 (84). The drawing is uncharacteristic of Lear, but it is possible that it was made during the winter of 1860-1 when he was working on a large painting of the Cedars, with the help of some cedar trees in the grounds of Oatlands Park Hotel at Walton-on-Thames, Surrey.
