According to Rodney Searight: - `The Property of an American Collector' at Sotheby's 29.11.73 (185). `Bt Spink, Dec.1973, £350 [in part exchange]'.
Historical context
Accompanied by John Cross, Lear left Cairo for Sinai on 12 January 1849, returning to Suez on 4 February: see RA, 1985 (55). Other drawings from the trip were sold at Sotheby's 29.11.73 and 21.3.74. The view shows the Wadi Ligah with a monastery (the Deir al-Arbayn). This is to the west of the Wadi al-Deir in which is situated the Monastery of Saint Catherine. Prominent are Gabal Safsaf (Mount Horeb), Gabal Musa (Mount Sinai) and Gabal al-Rabbah. See Searight Archive.
