Gold pendant in form of Paddington Bear by Cartier, London, 1975, with hard red case

Gold pendant in the form of a cast standing figure of Paddington Bear wearing a hat and holding a pencil to his mouth with his left paw. From his right paw hangs an open book. The pendant has for the most part a brushed matt surface, but Paddington's fur is rendered with crisply engraved lines, and on the pages of the book writing is suggested by engraved wrigglework. The toggles of his duffle coat are also engraved. Paddington's nose, paws and the open pages of the book are burnished. The back of the pendant is slightly hollowed.

A fixed suspension ring on top of Paddington's hat is attached to a loose gold ring.

Hard case covered in red fabric. White silk lining to lid with name and London, Paris and New York addresses of Cartier. Base lined in black velvet.

This pendant was bought by Clive Kandel, the donor, from Cartier London. He gave it to James Alphonsus Doherty (1952-1995), in whose memory it has been given.

The much-loved stories about Paddington Bear, a bear from 'Darkest Peru' who is sent to London, were created by Michael Bond (1926-2017) and translated into many languages. This finely-made pendant, engraved and burnished, was made by Cartier London in 1975. The figure takes its inspiration from the illustrations of Peggy Fortnum (1919-2016) for the Paddington books.
