Known and Strange: Photographs from the Collection (2021-2022) Photography Centre, Gallery 101 Donna Ruff (born 1947) 23.3.16, 2016 From the series Migrant, 2011–16 Ruff used newspaper front pages as the basis for this series. She cut and reshaped the paper into patterns inspired by Moorish tiles and fretwork found in the Middle East, Spain and Africa. Here, she has intricately removed parts of a photograph from The Independentnewspaper which depicts the Brussels bomb attacks on 22 March 2016. Through her combination of design history, paper craft and photography, Ruff challenges the ways that photojournalism and the mainstream media have reported on global crises.
