This dress was designed by Alexander McQueen (1969-2010) as part of his first collection for Givenchy, Spring/Summer 1997. He called the collection ‘The Search for the Golden Fleece’. McQueen was one of the most celebrated designers of the late 20th and early 21st century. He is known for his highly original designs which married artistry with exceptional technical ability. McQueen was appointed as the chief designer of womenswear at Givenchy in October 1996 and worked there until 2001.

This dress is ‘Look 43’ from the collection. It was worn on the catwalk at the collection’s presentation at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris on 19th January 1997 and can be seen in video footage from the show. It is made in ivory silk with an exaggerated collar and heavy gilt embroidery. These features can be found in multiple designs from the collection.
