To mark the refurbishment of the Cast Courts in 2018, the V&A commissioned the Royal College of Art to produce 23 scans of objects in the collection. Curators chose examples that would show parts of objects that were otherwise inaccessible, or that would stretch the capabilities of the scanning and printing equipment. For some of these, the digital file will be the only copy created. Reproduced here is a plaster print of a silver and glass flask bought by the Museum from the Great Exhibition in 1851. Its highly reflective surfaces were difficult to capture in the scan. As with plaster casts, 3D prints like this are ghostly impressions of the original works.
