Place of origin |
The third theatre on the site in Drury Lane was destroyed by fire on 24 February 1809. After an energetic fundraising campaign the fourth Drury Lane theatre, built to designs by Benjamin Wyatt, opened on 10 October 1812. This print was published a month later. The unnamed artist has emphasised the building's imposing frontage by exaggerating its size and showing it to be towering over the pedestrians and carriages. Wyatt's theatre is the one which stands in Drury Lane today
