CHEST: DRAWERS IN IRREGULAR FORM Designed by Shiro Kuramata (Japanese, 1934-1991), 1970 First made by Capellini, Milan, Italy, in about 1986, this example 1989 Ash veneers, stained and lacquered Purchased with the help of the manufacturer W.12-1989 Kuramata's work typifies the international outlook of many contemporary Japanese designers. The minimalist aesthetic of this piece derives both from traditional Japanese design and from Western Modernism. Its unorthodox shape encourages its perception as sculpture rather than as a utilitarian piece of furniture.(1992)
