A thieving monkey and donkey-riding rabbit are among the characters depicted on this humorous screen. The design is based on the 12th-13th century ‘Comic Paintings of Animals and Humans' (Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga), a designated National Treasure of Japan. This set of satirical handscrolls is celebrated for its lively anthropomorphic scenes and also for its linear style, which is thought to be the origin of Japanese manga. The famous work has been skilfully recreated in silk by master weavers at Hakata Takumi Kougei.
