Historical context
Prince Mihail Soutzo (1784-1864; known as Mihal-Voda) belonged to an influential Phanariot Greek family based in Constantinople, where he was Grand Dragoman, 1817. Vaivode of Moldavia 1818-21, when deposed. Confined in Austria for four years, then visited Italy. Participated in the Greek War of Independence. Greek Ambassador to Paris and St. Petersburg and later settled in Athens. See D.
