When the ancient city of Palmyra was destroyed by Islamic State militants in 2015, it brought worldwide attention to the fragility of archaeological sites in warzones. As an act of solidarity with the people of Syria, the Institute for Digital Archaeology created a 3D digital rendering of the now lost ‘Arch of Triumph’ using photogrammetry, so that it could be recreated in material form at any time. Based on approximately 200 photographs taken by archaeologists, scientists and tourists, the finished arch shows that a convincing reproduction can be created without touching the original. This scaleddown example was produced from the same digital file that created the 30%-scale reproduction first unveiled in Trafalgar Square, London, in April 2016.

Object history
CNC milled Egyptian marble reproduction of the Triumphal Arch in Syria. The original arch was built in the 3rd century and was destroyed by ISIS in 2015. In response to this The Institute for Digital Archaeology launched a crowdfunding campaign to source images of the arch in order to create a 3D model of the arch using photogrammetry. TORART were then commissioned to create a 70% scale reproduction and this was displayed in Trafalgar Square on the fourth plinth in 2016. A second further reduced version was made in 2018 and given to the musuem by the Institute for Digital Archaeology.
