This is an example of the historicism, in particular neo-Biedermeier, so prevelant [sic] in Central European design around 1900. Particularly interesting is that such borrowings extended to the work of the most progressive designers, who saw no conflict between the rigorously modern and the judicious reinterpretation of historic form.
