Marks and inscriptions | Inscribed falsely with monogram and dated FG 1871; impressed with ESK blind stamp, partly obliterated |
Credit line | Purchased with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund, Shell International and the Friends of the V&A |
Object history | According to Rodney Searight: - `Bt Phillips, Dec. 1973, £25'. |
Historical context | The ESK blind stamp indicates that this is a student work exhibited at the South Kensington Museum as part of an examination. Amongst the tasks set for the students in the Art Schools was an exercise in faithfully copying the work of a well-known artist. The fact that an attempt has been made by a previous owner to obliterate the blind stamp is suggestive. |
