glove puppet

Glove Puppet
1930s (made)
Place of origin

This puppet came from the collection of John Blundell (1937-2014), a prolific puppeteer, educator and collector of puppets.

This object is a rare example of satirical puppetry in the 1930s, depicting caricatures of the major political figures of the decade (Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini and Chamberlain). Audiences would have been familiar with both the international leaders and their relationships to one another. In the hands of the puppeteer, the politicians are reduced to comedy characters and targets for ridicule through physicality and mimicry.
