Pendant
ca. 1915 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
The undulating gold mount and ambiguous horned figure make this pendant an intriguing late example of Art Nouveau jewellery. It was made by Hugh Robus (1885-1964), a sculptor who trained as a jeweller early on in his career. Robus travelled to Europe between 1912 and 1914. He studied in Paris with Antoine Bourdelle, a pupil of Rodin, whose influence can perhaps be seen in the central carving. This piece was made shortly after his return.
During the first two decades of the twentieth century Robus used his abilities as a jeweller to fund his studies and support his family. His craft skills included metalworking and ivory carving.
