Cocktail dress with puffball skirt designed by Mary Quant for Bazaar, purchased by Nicky Hessenberg from Bazaar, Knightsbridge. The design can be found in contemporary fashion photography and a photograph exists of Hessenberg in the dress. Hessenberg noted, “In that period, to own a dress by Mary Quant was the pinnacle of most young women’s idea of heaven mainly because they were so expensive”.

Physical description
Cocktail dress of purple silk satin with short sleeves and a puff skirt. The skirt was originally gathered at the bottom but was later altered to give it a short A-line silhouette.

Nicky Hessenberg was on the fringes of the fading world of the debutante when, after leaving boarding school aged 18, her mother bought this dress as a ‘kind of bribe’ to help her navigate the ordeal of going to grown-up parties. Hessenberg attended secretarial college and later worked for House and Garden magazine.
