Place of origin |
Chasuble of brocaded lampas with the pattern of birds and foliage woven with metal-wrapped and coloured silk threads on red ground. The whole surrounded with a border of woven green, blue and plain linen. Applied orphreys front and back showing groups of figures. Both orphreys are pillar-shaped, and the following subjects are represented beneath turreted canopies on a ground of a diapered gold. On the front: the meeting of Joachim and Anna at the Golden Gate; the Birth of the Blessed Virgin; the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin in the Temple. On the back: the betrothal of Joachim and Anna; Joachim and Anna at the marriage feast; their offer rejected by the high priest. The lapmas has a diagonal patter of a twisted thorn and leafy stem, and a hawk swooping upon a quail. At the bottom of the back orphrey is an embroidered fragment showing parts of canopies, cusped and crocketted, from a vestment of 14th century. The chasuble is lined with blue linen.
