Historical context | The watercolour shows the `Harpy' Tomb (on the right) after the reliefs which formerly covered the sides had been removed by Charles Fellows in January 1842. Ewart was Lieutenant on the Monarch which, with the Medea, in May-June 1842, was seconded from the British fleet in the Mediterranean to transport the sculptures from Xanthus to England, where they were reassembled in the BM. (See C. Fellows, Travels and Researches in Asia Minor, 1852, p.455; and T.A.B. Spratt, Travels in Lycia, 1847, Vol.I, pp.296-7). |
