Making It Up: Photographic Fictions (2018) Like many Pictorialist photographers, Barton found ideas for style, composition and subject matter in Old Master paintings. She made numerous Madonna and Child studies but considered The Awakening her ‘best picture’. It was included in the British section of the St Louis International Exhibition in 1904. Marta Weiss
