Order of the Saint-Esprit: Mantle, French, 16th Century' Séraphin Médéric Mieusement, Musée de Cluny about 1870 By the late 19th century, many museums were photographing large parts of their collections and sharing those images widely. The photographer Séraphin Médéric Mieusemennt took hundreds of images of medieval objects in the Musée de Cluny (now the Musée de Moyen Age), including these fragile textiles. The V&A, among other museums, bought 670 of these photographs to add to its own collection and expand its visual encyclopaedia of ornament.
