Haneri (Half Collar)

Artist/Maker

Small sections of this brightly coloured half-collar (han-eri) are visible below an equally bold kimono. Formed of a small rectangular length of fabric, han-eri are sewn to the collars of under-kimono (naga-juban). Although usually plain white, decorative han-eri such as this further enhance the kimono ensemble. Made of teal polyester crepe, it has a psychedelic design of fluorescent mushrooms which harmonises with the vibrant underwater patterns on the kimono, obi and obi-dome. All of these pieces are by Iroca, a kimono brand based in Tokyo. Founded by Ishikawa Narutoshi in 2001, the brand started with accessories rather than kimono. For Ishikawa, all aspects of Japanese dress need to reflect contemporary design, an ambition achieved through his vivid use of colour, imaginative patterns and unusual kimono materials like digitally printed polyester.

(29/02/2020)
This vibrant ensemble by Iroca features a broken war plane submerged in the ocean. This politically charged motif reflects designer Ishikawa Narutoshi’s (b.1965) desire for an end to conflict. For Ishikawa, who started out by making obi accessories, all aspects of Japanese dress should be contemporary. This ambition is achieved through his vivid use of colour, imaginative patterns and unusual materials.
