Making It Up: Photographic Fictions (2018)

The actress Yvonne Arnaud most likely wore this costume for her role as Katharine in a production of Shakespeare’s Henry V, rather than for a scene staged expressly to be photographed. The rich greens of the fabric and vivid red of her lips are typical of the Vivex colour process, which Bird embraced in the 1930s.
